The Ethics of AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in almost every field today. It facilitates medical diagnosis and treatment planning. It helps optimize agricultural and industrial processes. It also allows you to create effective chat boxes to improve customer service. It is even being used to make legal decisions. Unfortunately, the ethical side of AI is often called into question. This is how the “Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence” was born. It has been signed and adopted by 193 countries as of 2021.
What is the purpose of AI ethics?
AI ethics is a set of moral principles that should be respected in the development of artificial intelligence. It is a kind of beacon that serves to limit incidents. It ensures that the technology respects human rights and the law. Whether in terms of justice, security, or confidentiality. It also ensures the reliability of the technology’s analysis and decisions. Finally, respecting AI ethics builds trust among users and their customers.
What are the principles of AI ethics?
AI ethics is based on 4 fundamental principles:
- Transparency
- Prevention of bias
- Confidentiality
- Responsibility
Transparency
Some institutions use artificial intelligence to make decisions. For example, in the context of
- Medical treatment;
- Optimizing a transportation route;
- Improving product suggestions for customers.
It’s important that they understand how the technology works to get the most out of it. The designer must therefore provide detailed explanations. How does AI make decisions? What data does it rely on? All elements must be made transparent.
Prevent bias
AI algorithms must limit discrimination as much as possible. The system needs to treat everyone equally. Without taking into account race, social class, intellectual level, age, gender, or disability.
Confidentiality
Hackers today use advanced technologies. You may have noticed that data theft and identity theft are on the rise. AI designers need to apply protocols that ensure the privacy of user data. Especially since it will be processing sensitive information:
- Medical records
- Corporate financial data
- Government information
Responsibility
AI decisions can have a significant impact on people’s lives. For example, a bad legal decision could punish an innocent person and set a dangerous person free. An incorrect diagnosis could be fatal for a patient. AI developers are fully responsible for their product. Users also have a responsibility. They must also explain to their customers how the system works if they decide to use it for the benefit of others.
